As Pokemon GO continues to lure Calgarians out
of their hovels, the city says it’s keeping a close eye on popular
locales in case they require a larger security presence.
Ijaz, who filmed dozens of Calgarians cluster
on the Jaipur Bridge in Eau Claire, said things were pretty chill prior
to the sighting.
“It all started in the field to be honest,
hanging around the lures when all of a sudden you hear people screaming
‘Aerodactyl,’” Ijaz said. “After a couple of name-drops you started
hearing whistles, and thats when it got crazy — people started running
to the bridge from both sides, north and the south.”
People were rubbing shoulders once on the bridge, Ijaz added.
“People were pumped, excited and hyped,” he said. “No one was pushing or screaming and all around happy.”
Mary Ann Houston, a spokesperson for the City
of Calgary, said the city is monitoring the Pokemon-GO situation, adding
peace officers will be at the ready in case a serious incident does
occur.
“We’re happy to see people out exercising,” she said. “Be careful in traffic.”
She said Poketrainers should be careful to not
hiring non-licensed drivers to help them catch the monsters, adding
being in a friend’s car or a licensed taxi is OK.
Ijaz said Tuesday’s Aerodactyl-sighting is the third time he’s spotted a rare Pokemon in Prince’s Island Park.
He’s been going there almost every day for an hour or two.
“Tuesday night was awesome and savage,” he
said. “Seeing all the people there was weird. Yea, it was insane seeing
so many of them, but at the same time kinda scary with everyone trying
to rush the bridge. So it was a roller coaster of emotions: excitement,
scary, and ridiculous.”

Prince’s Island Park
- The Jaipur Bridge is known for its dragon Pokemon, and many trainers set up lures at the numerous Pokestops. There are also gyms.
Connaught Park and the Beltline
- Even if there isn’t a lure, trainers have spotted Kabutos, Squirtles, Polywraths, Charmanders, and more. Don’t forget: gyms.
Chinook Centre
- What makes Chinook a great spot is that it has free wifi, Pokestops, gyms, a food court and lots of walking to hatch your eggs.
Research Park
- Located near the University of Calgary, you’ll find eight Pokestops right next to each other, causing trainers to usually make one massive lure.
